Keeping temporary workers safe
When temporary workers join you to help out during the harvest or other busy times of the year it’s important, for their protection and yours, that they understand your safety rules. Don’t assume seasonal workers are always familiar with farming or it’s associated risks.
Keep these things in mind
- Take time to make sure temporary workers are aware of your safety procedures.
- Make sure you have enough personal protection equipment for all temporary workers.
- Check they have the proper training before you allow them to use machinery or equipment.
- Expect that some workers will need a level of supervision.
- You might not share the same first language with temporary workers, so take extra care to ensure they have understood warning signs and safety procedures.
- Do they understand the dangers of working with livestock?
Take time to brief temporary workers in order to avoid accidents. Give them the benefit of your farming experience.
