Air Filters

Supplying Clean Air to the Engine

This advice from AGCO Technician Ash Briggs on engine filter care; what to do and importantly what not to do to get the best performance from your machine.

Engines consume large volumes of air, particularly when working hard. In agricultural environments, the air almost always contains dust, soil particles, pollen and other organic debris.

Because any air drawn into the intake system is carried directly into the engine, effective filtration is essential. The primary air filter removes the majority of contamination, while the secondary filter, if fitted, provides additional support should the primary filter become damaged or incorrectly fitted.

If air filters are neglected or incorrectly serviced, the following issues can occur:

  • Restricted airflow, reducing engine efficiency and increasing fuel consumption.

  • Fine abrasive particles entering the engine, accelerating wear to cylinders, pistons and valves.

  • Reduced effectiveness of the secondary filter, particularly if it is reused during servicing.

  • Increased risk of turbocharger wear, as high-speed components are especially sensitive to contamination.

It is also worth mentioning that the old school practice of blowing air filters out with an airline does not restore them to their original condition. Compressed air can actually damage the filter media and may force fine particles deeper into the material, reducing its effectiveness. While cleaning may extend short-term usability, it cannot return the filter to the level of efficiency it had when new.

Replacing air filters at the correct service interval ensures consistent airflow and reliable filtration.
